What a great Homecoming week at Robert E. Hendrickson High School! There was so much excitement and energy last week and I hope the Hawks used their time Monday to catch up on rest and homework. The HHS students never cease to amaze me with their passion for their school and being a part of the school community.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 we will be administering the PSAT, Texas Success Initiative and preparing for the STAAR exam. Attached is the schedule for the day and students need to check the rosters in the main hallway for their testing (PSAT) room assignment. Seniors scheduled to take the TSI need to check in with Mrs. Spradlin in the College and Career Center for their assignment.

Because of the number of students being given the PSAT, we are asking students to bring their own calculator to use. It is not necessary to go out and purchase a calculator, but if you student has one, please have them bring it to school on Wednesday.

Please note that because of the timing of the test our lunches are scheduled later than normal. It is imperative that students eat breakfast or pack a snack that they can eat during one of the testing breaks.

Thank you for all you do to support our students.

As this week’s Homecoming activities begin I want to congratulate the Robert E. Hendrickson High School Student Council for its Hawk for Harvey Campaign. The students will collect money that will be sent to both Port Aransas and Rockport high schools as they return to school after Hurricane Harvey. If you are interested in helping these schools, please come by the main office and make a donation to the HHS STUCO. All funds that are collected will be sent to both high schools.

There are several links (including one for Homecoming events, one for a FFA sale and one for the Michael Wozniak Golf Tournament), and please review the new bell schedule as there are some minor adjustments that affect the beginning and end of each lunch period.

    Hawks for Harvey Homecoming Campaign:

This year Hawk Nation is leading a fundraising BLITZ to help Port Aransas and Rockport high schools, both devastated by Hurricane Harvey.

Hawk Student Council is asking for EVERY STUDENT in the school to bring a suggested monetary donation of $5 to their 2nd Period A Day Class. The donation can be more and it is understandable if it is less. Hawk Nation wants to help both these school recover what Hurricane Harvey took from them and make their HOMECOMING the best possible.

All of the Hawk fans will also be able to give to this awesome cause by making a donation at the Homecoming game!

The event will be from Oct. 2-6.

The school year is off to a fast start and the Hawks are off to their standard setting ways. The Class of 2018 is leading the way with an Apply Texas (standard Texas college and university application) completion rate of over 80%. This class has come to understand the importance of planning ahead and thinking about the their next educational step.

The Class of 2019 will be ordering their class rings from Herff Jones tomorrow and Wednesday (details below) and they continue to fall into their new leadership role with enthusiasm and excitement.

Our underclassmen have been amazing and are adjusting to the school year in great fashion. There are many leadership opportunities on campus and both the C/O 2020 and C/O 2021 are quick to jump into leadership roles and work hard when needed.

The HHS Library is very busy these days and I would like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to our new Librarian, Kara Johnson and Library Aide, Savannah Guerra. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Guerra have created a great environment in the library and our students are excited about visiting the library all day long. Thank you both for all your hard work in making the library an inviting place for our students.

    National Merit Scholar Recognition:

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)— which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.6 million entrants each year.

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

Please help me to congratulate the Hendrickson High School National Merit Commended Scholars:

    • Sarah Flynn
    • Cory Gunter
    • Alex London
    • Bennett McCullough
    • Brinda Prasad
    • Grant Richardson
    • Daniel Schulze
    • Gabrielle Viduya

Also, each year the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) recognizes about 5,000 academically outstanding high school students from the more than 400,000 Hispanic and Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT®. The following Hendrickson High School Students earned recognition by the College Board as National Hispanic Recognition Scholars:

    • Christian Boswell
    • Christian Douglas
    • Samuel Perales

    See You at the Flagpole:

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, the Hawk Softball and FCA are joining together for a “See you at the Pole”/Woz remembrance at 8 a.m. to celebrate and honor Coach Woz’ life. Please join Hawk Softball and FCA at the flag pole in the front of the school to commemorate the life of Coach Wozniak.

Robert E. Hendrickson High School Band:

The Hendrickson High School Wind Ensemble submitted recordings of "Mars" by Gustav Holst and "Dance Movements" by Philip Sparke last spring. The recordings were compared against recording from the best high school bands from around the United States. An elite panel of college band directors 'blindly' evaluated the recordings. Only nine bands were selected in the United States for the distinction of "Mark of Excellence" from 'The Foundation for Music Education'. The Hendrickson HS Wind Ensemble was one of those 9 bands that earned the "Mark of Distinction." This is a tremendous achievement for our students.

Congratulations to our 2017 All-Region Jazz Band members:

    • Nick Arellano: 4th Chair Trumpet — taping for All-State
    • Duncan Crow: 2nd Chair Tenor Trombone — taping for All-State

Our students have adjusted to the new school and appear to have settled into the routine a new year brings. I have attached several documents including the 2017-18 Dress Code, the updated HHS tardy policy and the Special Bell Schedule.

The Extended Lunch Schedule will be used on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017 as our students have earned an extended lunch by achieving a campus-wide attendance rate of 98 percent. Each week that our students achieve a 98 percent attendance rate as a whole, the entire campus will earn an extended lunch. I will let our school community know when we achieve this lofty attendance goal.

I would like to thank everyone that came out to Back to School Night. Our attendance was amazing and we appreciate you coming out to visit with our teachers and learning more about the courses your student is taking. I would also like to thank all the HHS teachers and staff that were in attendance. Their hard work and dedication is appreciated!

This week begins a very busy stretch of STAAR and Advanced Placement Exams on the Hendrickson High School campus.  Our students and staff have put in a lot of hard work leading up to all the exams and I look forward, with excitement, to the feedback on our performance.  Be aware that Hendrickson will be a closed campus to all visitors and volunteers, including during lunch for parents, due to the administration of state testing.  We will resume our regular school schedule each day once testing is complete, so students should plan on being on campus through the end of each school day.

Students that are taking the morning session Advanced Placement Exams have been given specific instructions to arrive by 7:40 am. Please make sure your student arrives on time if they are taking a morning test this week, so they do not miss out on this opportunity.

On Friday, May 5, 2017, we will run an altered schedule to provide our teachers (and students) a longer lunch period.  We will be celebrating the Teacher Appreciation Week and want to honor our team with a little extra time to sit and enjoy lunch.  I have attached the schedule for your review, please note that student lunches B/C are combined.

Below is the schedule for the week, please note that the we will be on a Non-Talon Schedule on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and all students(including Seniors)  will need to be in class by 8:55 am.  We will be on a Non-Talon schedule on Thursday and Friday.

Getting through this week brings us one more week closer to graduation, so I have attached the timeline for the remainder of the year for the Class of 2017.  Attached you will also find a very specific schedule for June 2, 2017, graduation day.  All graduating Seniors will ride the bus to the Frank Erwin Center and be allowed to return home with their families after the ceremony.  Those students requiring a return ride will be able to return back to Hendrickson on the bus.

As always thank you for your support of our students and campus.  We continue to have so many reason to celebrate and honor our students and staff.  I continue to support and cheer on our achievements as a campus with pride and honor.

There are many great things happening at Robert E. Hendrickson High School that even though the list below appears exhaustive, I am almost certain that I have left a significant accomplishment off by accident.  Please know that I am extremely proud of each and every student that works hard to represent and bring positive recognition to our school and community, they are the foundation of the tradition of excellence that is Hendrickson.

This week the staff selected our 2016-2017 Teacher, Rookie Teacher and Humanitarian of the year.  These are important recognitions as the recognition highlights the best of the best, not only on campus, but in my opinion, the state.

Being selected as Teacher of the Year on a campus with such a strong academic program as Hendrickson is a huge honor.  We know and understand that to be selected as Teacher of the Year by peers is not only validation of a commitment to excellence, but recognition of a commitment to all students.  It is my honor to introduce to you the 2016-2017 Hendrickson High School Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Sara Lucas!

I would like to recognize the hard work and dedication of the 2016-2017 Rookie Teacher of the Year.  Veteran teachers remember year one and to come to Hendrickson and be selected as Teacher of the Year is a big honor.  Please help me in congratulating the Hendrickson High School Rookie Teacher of the Year, Dayna Hunter!

There is nothing I can say about the 2016-2017 Hendrickson High School Humanitarian of the Year that can encapsulate what she means to our school community.  Heart of Gold and Servant Leader are a couple of terms that come to mind in describing her.  She embodies every quality of what the Hendrickson High School Humanitarian of the Year must have in order to be recognized with this honor.  Mrs. Barczi we are proud of all the good you represent and that you, by example, make us all better.

    With Pride and Honor,

    Daniel Garcia
