Community Service Opportunities
Looking for a fun and rewarding service opportunity?
Our School Counselor is recruiting volunteers to serve as mentors to students. Spending a minimum of 30 minutes a week one-on-one with a student can increase self-esteem and academic success. National research shows that it is important for our youth to have at least three non-parent adults whom they can trust. Without this adult support, young people are more likely to engage in risk-taking behaviors. Activities that mentors participate in with students depend on their age and interests, the mentor’s talents and availability, as well as the time of year. Some suggested activities are:
Eat lunch together
Select library books & read together
Set goals and check progress
Play cards or board games, or practice sports skills
Practice math facts flashcards
Prepare a science project
Write a story or draw pictures
Assist student with a service learning activity such as shelving library books
Attend class parties, assemblies, Science Fair, Field Day, etc.
Participate in monthly after school group activity for mentors & mentees
As with all our school district’s volunteer opportunities, an application and consent to a background check is required and can be accessed at the Pflugerville ISD website. Please contact our school counselor if you would be interested in serving as a mentor to a student this school year. A brief training session is provided at the volunteer’s convenience.
As a mentor you can be a part of helping young people overcome adversity, succeed in school, and become community leaders!
