    Rocket Families,

With less than a week left, we need some volunteers in key areas for Pfall Pfreak Out. The PTO team literally cannot run Pfall Pfreak Out safely without volunteers. We need your help!

Each grade level is hereby challenged to fill the following high-need shifts:

    Pre-K/Kinder/3rd

Inflatables 1-4 (these absolutely cannot run without one adult per inflatable every hour)

    Fortune Teller Monitor

    Volunteer Check-in

    1st/4th

    Photo Booth Monitor

    Auction Monitors

    Planetarium Monitors

    2nd/5th

    Balloon Artist Monitor

    First Aid Station

    Floaters

We can do it! In addition to being an important responsibility, these shifts are fun opportunities to interact with the kids and socialize with friends and neighbors. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Again, you may use this link to help us out:

    Rocket Families,

This coming Saturday, here at Rowe Lane from 2-6pm, our school will be transformed into a festival for Pfall Pfreak Out! Thank you for the contributions and recruiting to put together some incredible auction baskets again this year. If you have any final contributions, please get those in ASAP so that we can prepare the displays for the event. We hope everyone can stop by for at least a portion of the evening. I for one am looking forward to the indoor planetarium!

Shout Outs this week go to Lindsay Villa, Candace Pruitt, Stacie Aho, and the Kinder Parents who provided us with a Chili Lunch this past Friday. Delish, and just in time for the cooler fall weather!

    Multicultural Literature

This year, Rowe Lane is making a focused effort to find new ways of recognizing the rich, multicultural heritage that makes up our community. An important part of this is maintaining diverse literature in our classroom libraries. Two of our 3rd grade teachers have Donors Choose campaigns at this moment to acquires some new titles. Please follow the links if you are able to support Mrs. Olson or Mrs. Goode. Teachers also will have some wish list items at next month’s book fair.

    Rocket Families,

Collectively, Rowe Lane provided over 1,000 books to support Pflugerville Middle School’s Destination Imagination team in putting literature back into the hands of students severely impacted by Hurricane Harvey. This weekend I was privileged to help with the delivery and spoke with one of the 5th grade teachers at Bear Creek Elementary in Katy ISD. He shared that around three-hundred of their students still are displaced from homes. I am sure the DI team encountered similar stories in Rockport and Hull-Daisetta as they distributed around 6,500 books in total throughout the weekend. Clearly there is plenty of rebuilding yet to be done for our neighbors, and it is heartening to know PfISD students and our community are taking up the cause.

A reminder that tomorrow is a holiday for our students while teachers engage with the work of setting and tracking year-long goals for each and every student at Rowe Lane. Our aim is to ensure we challenge and support every child to learn and grow as much as possible over the next eight months.

Thanks for the outstanding response to our impromptu support of a book drive for fellow elementary schools impacted by Hurricane Harvey. The donation bin has been filled and emptied twice already to accommodate all the books. We are keeping the effort going until the final pick-up date this Wednesday. The bin will be in the front foyer if you would like to contribute.

    Rocket Families,

Some of the most gratifying moments in education are also the most humbling. This weekend, I was approached by Pflugerville Middle School’s Destination Imagination team about a service learning project they devised. These students perceived that in addition to communities affected by Hurricane Harvey needing basic necessities and labor to rebuild, the books and literature in schools also had been destroyed. Libraries are nothing short of critical to learning at the elementary level, and it is near impossible to imagine a school day without access to a variety of literature. Their idea? Activate book drives in our local schools to collect as many books as possible to be delivered to schools and children in need.

Attached is a flyer complete with student-created artwork. If you have new or gently used books you can part with for this great cause, feel free to place them in this bin in the front foyer over the next week-and-a-half:

    Rocket Families,

Mission Accomplished! We had nearly every setback imaginable, but at long last, our playgrounds are updated with new play structures. We expect to get the final “green light” in the morning, and until then our largest play structure is wrapped up like a present. Once it is unwrapped and the caution tape comes down, the students will be free to enjoy. Check out some great pics here, and, be sure to check out the front flower beds. Some of our ambitious crew weeded the beds and restored them beautifully for fall!

    Shout Outs:

    - to “The A Team” of Parents, students, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends from college, and Mr. Lundin. This project was merely a plan until you all made it come together. If I try to thank you all by name, I surely would leave someone out, but you know who you are, and I am so, so grateful for the work you did Saturday (and even Friday evening).

    - to our PTO, for feeding the hungry volunteers Saturday, AND for feeding our teachers breakfast last Thursday. It was the perfect way to start our day and it kept our teachers fueled all the way through Back to School Night.

    - to the PfISD Grounds Crew. These gentlemen have bent over backwards, always with supportive attitudes to help execute the plan and the majority of the heavy work required to install our playground. Special thanks to Mario Bracamontez, PfISD Grounds Supervisor, for his time, attention, and expertise.

    - to Coach Lundin and Coach Doty, who were honored at Austin City Hall this past Friday by Mayor Steve Adler for earning Rowe Lane the “Healthiest School Award.” Outstanding!

    - to the newest members of the Campus Advisory Council, who graciously volunteered their time to serve our school this year through strategic planning and reflection. Invaluable feedback already.

We get to catch our breaths this week, but please read on for some announcements and reminders regarding the weeks ahead.

    Ben

New face in the Front Office

Mrs. Huerta has accepted a full time position at Kelly Lane Middle School, and while we dearly will miss Ms. Dora, we are excited to welcome Javonna McWilliams to the front office staff. Mrs. McWilliams is quickly getting up to speed on our systems, but please do introduce – and reintroduce – yourselves when you stop by so she can begin the work of becoming familiar with all our families.

    Playground!

We did it! Installation was completed, and our students are set to enjoy some brand new playground equipment. Since the playground will be a more popular draw than before, I need to take this opportunity to inform/remind everyone that our Extended Day Program runs Monday through Friday until 6:30pm and does make use of the playground. Because they are a licensed daycare facility, the playground must be reserved exclusively for our EDP students’ use from 3:00-6:30pm. Please help me in reminding our children that they may not use the playground after school during the week.

    Rocket Families,

At long last, I believe we have everything in place for our Playground build this Saturday. We will close the playground this Friday so that our grounds crew can move woodchips and dib post holes. We will be ready to construct and place the new playground equipment on Saturday, beginning at 8:00 a.m.

We could use all the assistance we can get, and it would be great if you are able to bring tools, (power drills, ratchets, bit drivers, pliers, wrenches, hammers, sledge hammers, rakes, shovels, 5-gallon buckets, etc.) and any spare 2x4” pieces of lumber (8 or 10 feet in length) and tent stakes to steady our structures while the concrete sets.

Thank you for your patience, and I cannot wait to see the excitement on our kids’ faces when the project is complete.

Hoping to see you this evening for Back to School Night!

    Ben

    Rocket Families,

First off, thank you for your generosity with a stream of donations that came in to Rowe Lane these past two weeks. We were able to load a truck with our friends from Keller Williams and the Salvation Army filled with much needed items bound for some of the hard-hit communities outside the greater Houston area. At this very hour, watching yet another devastating event unfold in Florida, there is solace knowing that communities like this stand ready to assist.

It was wonderful seeing so many smiles on our Rockets’ faces this past Friday for our Grandparents’ Day lunch. We always have a tremendous turn out, and we are hoping to exceed that attendance this Thursday for our Back to School Night.

Many happenings this week, so read on for more details on the events ahead,

Urban Air Spirit Night, THIS Monday

    Cost-free Ways to Support RLES

Did you know that you can support Rowe Lane simply by making your ordinary Amazon purchases and designating Rowe Lane Elementary as your Amazon Smile recipient? Simply visit AmazonSmile, add Rowe Lane PTO as the beneficiary, and shop as usual. Amazon donates a percentage back to our school! Also, many employers have corporate sponsorship or volunteer incentives to benefit schools. Is yours one of them? If so, we hope you will consider directing resources back our way!

    Pfall Pfreak Out, Oct. 21

Our Pfall Pfreak Out is our school carnival, complete with rides, games, and fun for the whole family. The entire event is organized by our PTO and the funds raised drive the PTO initiatives for the entire year. Save the date to join us for the afternoon!

    Rocket Families,

This first Week of School has been exceptional for a number of reasons. First off, thank you to for giving generously to our Salvation Army drive. Our foyer overfloweth with donations that will be directed to the Hurricane Harvey Relief effort. Please keep it coming! A detailed list of specific items we are collecting through this Friday is available at the RLES PTO Facebook page.

Second, in spite of our traffic challenges, our children are arriving to school safe, and the vast majority are arriving before or around 7:20 a.m. to allow for an easy transition into learning for the day. I know that requires a concerted effort by the adults at home, and I want you to know it makes a big difference here at school.

We have a shorter but eventful week ahead, starting with our first PTO meeting of the year. We especially would like parents of new Rockets to attend and learn more about how our amazing PTO supports and drives many of the great things at Rowe Lane.

Read on for more details on the events ahead,

    Ben

    PTO Meeting, this Tuesday

Come on out to our first PTO Meeting of the year! Simply by having a child at Rowe Lane, you are an automatic member of the PTO. We will lay out the course for the year, and there are plenty of opportunities for various levels of support and involvement. See you Tuesday, September 5, from 6:30-7:30pm in the Rowe Lane Library. Child care is provided free-of-charge by our Hendrickson HS Honor Society for elementary school-age children.

    Meet the Superintendent, this Wednesday

The PfISD community is invited to a reception for Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Doug Killian, from 4:30-6:30pm Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the Rock Gym. More information here.

    Grandparents’ Day, this Friday

We celebrate Grandparents’ Day at Rowe Lane with an invitation for Grandparents to visit their grandchild during the student’s regularly scheduled lunch time. Grandparents are welcome to bring a lunch or purchase a lunch through our cafeteria. A reminder that although adults are not allowed to eat in the school cafeteria, we will have special seating available in the foyer, the science lab, and the library. Which brings us to the next item…

    Volunteers for Grandparents Day

We could use some volunteers to help us with seating and directing our visitors. If you can help for a shift, please sign-up at this link. Whether you will be able to help at this event or not, please be sure to complete a Volunteer application online if you have not done so for this school year. Volunteer approval needs to be completed online annually, and it can take a few days to a few weeks for approval.

Urban Air Spirit Night, Sep. 11

On Thursday, September 14, from 6-7pm, all parents are invited to visit with their child’s teacher to learn more about the learning journey your child will have this year.

    Change to Dismissal Schedule

We test drove a different dismissal routine and schedule last week, and we are making it official for the remainder of the school year. It should make very little difference to parents on the receiving end, but for your reference, here are the new dismissal times:

    2:41, 2nd grade

    2:43, 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades

2:45, PreK, Kinder, and 5th Grade

    First Fire Evacuation

Wednesday morning we will conduct our first fire evacuation drill of the year. We educate our students on how to respond in an emergency situation, and then we practice together in a calm and orderly way. Please know that if visitors are present when we conduct one of our emergency drills (which occur at least monthly), we do require that they participate with us. Typically, our drills last less than ten minutes.

    Volunteer Crossing Guard

If you would be interested in filling in as volunteer crossing guard from September 8 – 15 in the morning and afternoon, please contact Rhonda Butcher in the front office.
