    A little about Ms. Alexander

This will be my 4th year at Dearing Elementary School (DRES), I have been here since the school opened in 2014. My other school counseling experience was at Timmerman, and prior to that, Walnut Creek Elementary in Austin ISD. My classroom experience is in the primary grades, Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st grade. This is my 19th year in public education.

My Master’s Degree is in Professional Counseling and School Counseling. I hold two (2) Bachelor’s Degrees. My first Bachelor’s degree is in Human Services Administration from Hastings College. My second is from St. Edward’s University in History/Education. I attended The University of Texas-Austin for my Kindergarten Certification.

I enjoy reading, traveling, scuba diving, exercising, and many outdoor activities. I am a pescatarian, my favorite food is a pizza with lots of veggies, and extra cheese-Yum! My favorite colors are silver, black, and green.

    School Counseling

It is my goal to make sure all students know who the counselor is at Dearing, and in what ways I can help them. Building and facilitating relationships with the students is key to a school counselor, at any grade level. Once the relationships are built, students, we gain the trust of students, making it more likely for them to reach out with problems/concerns. I am happy to say that DRES is a Capturing Kids Hearts campus which aligns perfectly to the counseling framework.

The primary goal of a school counselor is to help students with social and emotional needs so they can better focus on academic acceleration. I do classroom guidance which focus on self-esteem, bucket filling, personal space, friendships, diversity, drug-awareness, career readiness, and more.

I help support teachers to ensure that each student’s academic needs are being met. Sometimes it may look like putting organizational skills in place for the student at school or home. A small group may be a good fit for a student who is experiencing, for example, difficulty with transitioning to a new grade/new school, friendships, test anxiety, etc.

I am happy to be a part of the staff at DRES. I am excited to see the returning students and look forward to meeting the new Dearing Eagles.
