Students bound for state academic, one-act play meets

Pflugerville ISD will be represented by seven individuals and a one-act play cast and crew at state academic and one-act play meets this week and next month.
Rene Otero of Hendrickson High School, the 2017 Class 6A state champion in Informative Speaking, was named regional Informative Speaking champion at the Class 6A Region II Spring Meet April 12-13 at Baylor University. He qualified for state along with fellow Hendrickson student Lauren Thompson, who qualified in the Prose Interpretation category.
Sarah Moore of Hendrickson placed fourth in Computer Applications at the regional meet and will serve as a first alternate for the state meet.
Also from Hendrickson, the Hawk Theatre One-Act Play cast and crew advanced to the state meet, with Class 6A performances and critiques to take place Thursday and Friday at the Round Rock ISD Performing Arts Center. Hendrickson is scheduled to perform at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Pflugerville High School captured the Speech Sweepstakes award at the Class 5A Region III Spring Meet April 12-13 in Waller, Texas. PHS took the top Speech prize from among 65 schools competing at the regional meet.
PHS student Randy Hodges was the top individual in Physics, while Ashton Rios (poetry interpretation) and Audrey Higley (prose interpretation) captured first place in their respective categories. Coltrane Drexler of PHS won first in Persuasive Speaking while Joseph Garza of PHS was the top individual in Informative Speaking.
Hodges will compete at the UIL Academic State Meet May 3-4 at the University of Texas at Austin. The other PHS students will join Otero and Thompson of Hendrickson at the UIL Speech State Meet May 29-30 at UT.
