Two Weiss High School athletes advanced to the 2019 UIL Track and Field State Meet, held Friday and Saturday at Mike A. Myers Track Complex at the University of Texas at Austin.
Michaela Francois returned to the state meet, a year after winning bronze in the Class 4A girls 100-meter dash as a freshman. Michaela advanced to the girls 100m dash final in Class 5A this year.
Friday, Michaela and Deja Shaw Huckaby of Fort Worth Chisholm Trail broke away from the pack, with Francois maintaining a step lead about 80 meters into the race. Huckaby lunged closer at the finish line, but it wasn’t enough, as Michaela captured Weiss’ first-ever gold medal in state track.
Francois finished in 11.74 seconds, with Huckaby in second place at 11.79.
Weiss’s Daniel Morales became the campus’ first-ever male to advance to the state meet, competing in the Class 5A boys 800-meter run. Daniel, also a sophomore, came from behind to edge a competitor at the regional meet to advance to state.
Morales stuck in the pack for most of the race Friday, and finished less than three seconds off the winning time. Daniel ended the race in 1:56.18, good enough for seventh place.
Kyra Bauer and Michael Carmona head the Weiss track program.
Our congratulations to our state track qualifiers and our thanks to everyone who supported them on their journey.
