Dr. Killian recognized for his military and community service
Nov. 12, 2018 – U.S. Rep. Bill Flores (R-Texas) on Sunday honored Pflugerville ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Killian for his service to the nation and local community.
Rep. Flores, who represents Texas’ 17th Congressional District, recognized 26 military veterans with the TX-17 Congressional Veteran Commendation. Dr. Killian is a Marine Corps and Air Force Reserves veteran.
“On Veterans Day we honor those men and women who have served in our nation’s military,” Rep. Flores said in a press release. “The 17th Congressional District is home to thousands of veterans, many of which have continued their service through their involvement in our communities.”
Congressman Flores started awarding local veterans annually with the TX-17 Congressional Veteran Commendation in 2012 to coincide with Veterans Day. Nominees must reside in the 17th Congressional District.
The veterans who receive this commendation are nominated by local constituents in recognition of both their military service and service to their respective communities.
“I am honored and humbled to be recognized by Congressman Flores,” Killian said. “It has been my pleasure to passionately serve with and recognize our community’s veterans, on behalf of all those men and women who stepped forward to wear the uniform, including my father. Lest we forget their service.”
Dr. Killian has spent 14 years in education, beginning his career as a first-grade teacher in United ISD and serving as Hutto ISD superintendent for seven years before joining Pflugerville ISD last year.
He has also served as superintendent in Poteet and Huffman ISDs, and held administrative roles in Educational Service Center (ESC) 3 and 20.
Recipients of the commendation receive a special commemorative challenge coin, a certificate of recognition and a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in their honor on Veterans Day. Dates and times of commendation presentations are expected to be announced soon.
“Our nation’s veterans have sacrificed much for our freedom and liberties and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their selfless service. I look forward to awarding these veterans with their well-deserved commendations and continuing this 17th District Veterans Day tradition,” Flores added.
