Timmerman recognized by Green Ribbon Schools for conservation, fitness projects

Green Ribbon Schools, a reward and recognition program for K-12 students, recognized Timmerman Elementary School among 63 schools in 13 states and Guam for achieving the online community’s highest level of participation during the 2011-2012 school year.

To be named a recipient, Timmerman Elementary was required to publish at least four projects around green building, recycling, conservation, the outdoors, health, nutrition and fitness. The campus’s projects included:
  • Watt Watchers
  • Timmerman Inner Space Cave Explorations
  • Healthivores
  • Butterfly Garden
The national “Green Ribbon Schools” recognition and award program was developed by a strong collaboration of organizations and individuals that share the common concern that children are increasingly disconnected from nature and outdoor play. The group believes there are key and essential benefits to children's health, development and well-being through outdoor play, experiencing and discovering nature first-hand.
“The students really enjoyed the program and the projects they took part in,” 5th grade teacher Suzie Neuenschwander said. “They just loved the hands-on materials and the real-life experiences they received while doing the projects. It really brought the curriculum to life for them.”

The 2012-2013 GRS program is open to all schools and is free of charge. The program features an enhanced website that helps teachers use nature, health and fitness, and STEM activities to enrich and extend students’ education. STEM skills teach kids about – and how to apply – science, technology, engineering and math.

The national “Green Ribbon Schools” recognition and award program consists of collaboration among organizations committed to helping children develop their full potential by connecting with the wonders of nature. Sponsors include the AMD Foundation, the Brown Foundation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas and individual contributors. The program includes the Healthivores® contest to promote healthier lifestyles.

Other campuses in PISD participating in the Green Ribbon Schools program include: Copperfield Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Murchison Elementary, Pflugerville Elementary, Rowe Lane Elementary, Dessau Middle School, Kelly Lane Middle School, Westview Middle School, Connally High School and Pflugerville High School.
