Graduation Update - Class of 2020

Dear PfISD Graduates and Families,

 

PfISD staff is still working fast and furiously to get all the details complete for our Graduation ceremonies scheduled to begin Monday. Below you will find a Graduation Information Packet (PDF) outlining rules and procedures for all graduation ceremonies. Please take the time to read the document entirely in preparation for your special day - especially this year which will have many firsts for us, particularly taking into account the required physical distancing.

 

Once again, we have many rules and requirements set forth by the state for us to hold an in-person graduation, and we are counting on all parties involved - graduates and their families - to help us by following the rules set forth in the attached document. One major change for this year is the limited number of guests allowed per student. Please remember that we are doing a seating chart in the stands which must be followed and as such, tickets are not transferable. Additionally, everyone attending must have a ticket to enter the stadium - regardless of their age (this includes infants and toddlers). The seating chart is available in the PDF below.

 

NOTE:  Livestreaming

The district is contracting with a company to provide livestreaming of the event to allow those not in attendance to watch the ceremony live. A link to the livestream event can be found on the district’s website, or click HERE.  This link will be active at the beginning of the event as it is a livestream.   

 

Once again, thank you for your help and understanding as we all work to provide a wonderful, in-person graduation experience for our seniors and their families. It will take all of us to ensure we can pull it off!

ENTRY TICKETS FOR GRADUATION GUESTS

AND THE NEW SENIOR CONTRACT

 

 Seniors:

 

 In order for your guests to attend the graduation ceremony, they must have a district issued ticket. Each senior will be given 4 tickets ONLY. Please note that children of all ages will count as a ticket holder.

 

 YOU MUST SIGN THE GOOGLE FORM CONTRACT (SEE LINK BELOW) PRIOR TO PICKING UP THE TICKETS.

 

 Ticket Distribution dates for the PHS Graduation are  limited to these two days:

 

Thursday, May 28th                11:00 am -  3:00 pm

Friday, May 29th                            4:00 pm -  7:00 pm

 

  • Ticket Distribution will be located at the Gym Loop of PHS. This is the same spot that you picked up your cap and gown. Enter at Swenson Farms and Pecan.

 

  • Senior students must be present with their school ID/or other photo id in order to pick up tickets. If a parent/guardian is picking up tickets they must have their student’s current student ID/photo id for ticket pick up.

 

  • Before Students/Parents/Guardians are distributed tickets we must have received the student’s submission to the google form that they have read and understand the NEW senior contract. Since we are graduating at the PFIELD we have slightly different guidelines which is referenced in the contract.

 

  • TO USE ANY GOOGLE FORM FROM PFISD, INCLUDING THE SENIOR CONTRACT, YOU MUST BE LOGGED IN THROUGH YOUR STUDENT EMAIL ACCOUNT. Parents cannot access the contract with their email. Please take care of this prior to picking up your tickets so as not to create any delays.

  • There is no “Will Call” for tickets at the day of graduation. Please be sure to pick up your tickets on the days listed above.

Good Afternoon Panther Pfamily:

I wanted to go over a few things to clarify information for the days leading up to graduation:

Communication: PHS will continue to send out communication about dates, reminders and procedures; the methods of communications are as follows:  

  • The Senior Remind, set up through English IV classes at the begging of year
  • Senior Student emails or emails provided in the student survey distributed by our College and Career Counselor.
  • Parent emails of senior students that were set up through skyward.
  • PHS website, https://www.pfisd.net/Domain/9 Click on the Banner- “Class of 2020 News”
  • The district will be sending out communications through parent skyward emails, we will also post this info on the “Class of 2020 News”

Senior Contracts: There will be a new senior contract with new dress code criteria and guidelines for cap decorating. You must electronically sign the new senior contract using your PFISD email account and agree to the dress code, cap requirements, and student code of conduct before you receive your tickets. The new contract will be disseminated soon via the lines of communication stated above.

Senior Graduation RSVP:

Please RSVP for the graduation with the link provided on the email communication on Tuesday evening from PFISD Communications.  https://forms.gle/A1DXYxYRr1unP1V37 Any information you are asked for through a google form will most likely require you to sign in with your PFISD student email, if you are not signed in through google with that email address, it might not work.

Graduation Ticket Distribution: We will be announcing a date for ticket pick up. We will only have four tickets per graduate. Children of any age will count as ticket holders.

Dress Code for 2020 Graduates:

Cap and gown: 

  • Caps -- may be decorated on top only.  (Nothing should be hanging off the top or sides) Any messages should be appropriate and fall with-in the student code of conduct

Attire:

  • Warm weather attire which follows PFISD dress code.  (Shorts and t-shirts are fine.) 
  • Gowns should stay on until families leave the stadium.

Footwear:

  • Appropriate footwear following PFISD dress code – ladies, flats only (no heels or wedges.) The turf is hard to walk on in these types of shoes

 

Students enter through gates on either side of field house – staff will check dress code and ID, to let students through to their seat.

 

District Graduation Information: The district is going to provide specific instructions for the day of the ceremony that include guidelines for guests.

Cords: Any cords that were not distributed during Miles of Smiles/Cap & Gown Pickup, that are official from PHS student organizations and recognitions will be given at ticket distribution.

Yearbooks: As soon as we have an update on yearbooks, we will disseminate that information.

Textbook Dropoff: On Tuesday May 26th and every Monday after, you may drop off textbooks in the grey receptacle outside the front main entrance.

5/16 Graduation Update from Dr. Killian

Dear PfISD Parents/Guardians,

 As you know, district staff have been working on graduation contingency plans since late April. We understand the importance of graduation to our seniors and their parents, as well as the importance to our campus and district administrators to see the culmination of their work and watch our students walk the graduation stage. We are committed to doing all that we can to ensure that happens.

 Our Graduation Committee initially made four contingency plans to follow our scheduled graduation at the Frank Erwin Center on May 30. Still, it seems as though every time we settle on a strategy for graduation, we receive updated guidance from our local and state authorities that changes things. 

 The first contingency plan was to host graduation ceremonies on May 29 and 30; however, initial guidelines from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) prohibited outdoor, in-person graduations for our county until June 1. We then adjusted and planned to host graduations on June 1 and June 2, announcing to our public that same Tuesday. This was followed by updated guidance last Thursday by TEA allowing for May 29 or 30, but last Friday, Travis County extended its Stay at Home orders through June 15. As The Pfield is located in Travis County, we worked to determine how this will affect our graduation ceremonies. 

 After speaking with our legal counsel, reviewing all guidelines from TEA required to hold an in-person graduation ceremony and hearing from Travis County Health officials, we are moving forward with graduation ceremonies but we have adjusted the dates to ensure we are in compliance and utilizing as many safety precautions as possible. The updated schedule for graduations is as follows:

 

  • Pflugerville HS – June 1, 8 a.m.
  • Hendrickson HS – June 2, 8 a.m.
  • Connally HS – June 3, 8 a.m.
  • PACE – June 3, 11 a.m.
  • Weiss HS – June 4, 8 a.m.

 Graduates will be provided four tickets for guests to attend graduations at the Pfield, where we will host an abbreviated, recorded graduation ceremony on the football scoreboard and allow students to walk the stage in a cap and gown to collect their diploma cover. School principals, I and members of our Board of Trustees will be attendance, honoring our students. We are also working with a production company to livestream the event for those family members unable to attend. 

 We will contact students and their families with information on ticket pick-up dates and times. On the back of each ticket will list the symptoms of COVID-19, and all attendees will be required to sign the back of the ticket, acknowledging that they are not experiencing any symptoms. Each person will turn in their ticket when they enter the Pfield.

 Additionally, families will receive instructions on where to park, which gate to enter, and which section and row they are assigned to sit. All attendees will be required to wear face masks. The district is providing face masks to all graduates; however, they will be allowed to remove them for pictures when they walk across the stage. 

The district, in collaboration with the health department, asks that anybody who is medically compromised or over the age of 65 not attend the Graduation ceremonies. Additionally, if you share a household with someone who is medically compromised or over the age of 65 and attend a graduation, please take additional precautions before returning home.

 We know this is not how any of us planned on graduation at the beginning of this year. It will not be perfect, but we have heard our parents' and students' pleas to find a way to provide graduation, and we are doing everything in our power to provide this experience in a safe manner for all involved. We intend to make as much lemonade out of the lemons that we are being served.

 In the interest of everyone’s safety and the safety of others: Do not attend the ceremony if you feel sick or have any of the symptoms associated with COVID-19. It will be broadcast. Keep your social distancing at all times and follow our staff and officers directions at all times. If you are attending, come prepared with a mask and your signed ticket acknowledging you are not experiencing symptoms. For the safety of all, you will not be allowed to enter without these items, will not be allowed to remain if you do not practice the proper social distancing procedures, and will not be allowed to stay if you do not comply with staff directions. This includes our graduates. We care about all of you and want to have an in-person ceremony, but we must abide by safety measures.

 This is an enormous undertaking, and our staff is committed to working hard to provide our students with an unusual but incredible graduation experience, but we are also asking our families for their cooperation to ensure safe practices and social distancing. Thank you for your help and understanding.

 I hope that each of you are having a wonderful week. I am hoping to ask a huge favor of you. Please take a look and complete the three items below by May 12th, 2020.

 Initial Senior Survey (Due May 12th) – If you wouldn’t mind, please fill out this short survey to help me serve you better as we end the school year. It will allow me to help you with finalizing college or military enrollment and address any other questions/needs you may have such as sending documents (TSI Scores, Transcripts, etc.), Understanding a Financial Aid Package, etc. *Required*

Senior College Virtual Visits – Next week we will hold our final Virtual College Meetings. If you are hoping to ask specific questions of an Admission Representative, please sign up for one of these sessions (we are still adding more) by visiting this website. *Optional*

Coffee Chat with Mr. Howell (May 12th) – On May 12th from 6:00 – 7:30 PM, I will be available via Zoom to answer any questions you may have live and help you solidify your next chapter. You do not have to stay the entire time, you may come and go as you please (like an open house) to get your questions answered. 5/5 - An excerpt from Dr. Killian's parent update sent on 5/5

Graduation We have received many questions regarding graduation ceremonies, and, as I said last week, we created a Graduation committee of Principals, Campus Administrators, students, and parents to determine other options for our district. We understand the importance of graduation to our seniors and their parents. Please know it is also extremely important for our campus and district administrators to see the culmination of their work and watch our students walk the graduation stage, and PfISD is committed to doing all that we can to ensure that happens.

Our committee has created multiple plans in the hopes that one of them will be possible due to constraints of the state, county, and city orders. Initially, the plan included a possible graduation at the Frank Erwin Center on May 30, or graduations at The Pfield on May 29 and May 30. However, this afternoon, the Texas Education Agency provided guidance that restricts in-person, outdoor graduation ceremonies through the end of May. 

This has required us to alter our previous graduation schedules. Our new plan includes three opportunities for our students to have in-person graduation. The plans, in order of priority, are:

  1. Monday, June 1  at The Pfield – Connally HS (8 a.m.) and Hendrickson HS (10:30 a.m.) Tuesday, June 2 at The Pfield – Weiss HS (8 a.m.) and Pflugerville HS (10:30 a.m.)  
  2. Friday, June 12 at The Pfield – Connally HS (8 a.m.) and Hendrickson HS (10:30 a.m.) Saturday, June 13 at The Pfield – Weiss HS (8 a.m.) and Pflugerville HS (10:30 a.m.)  
  3. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at the Frank Erwin Center at regularly scheduled times

At this time we are preparing for graduations on June 1 and 2. If we are told those will not be possible, we will inform parents that we are moving to our back up plan for June 12 and 13. Graduates will be allowed four guests to attend graduations at the Pfield, where we will host an abbreviated, recorded graduation ceremony on the football scoreboard and allow students to walk the stage in a cap and gown to collect their diploma cover. School principals, I and members of our Board of Trustees will be attendance, honoring our students. We are also working with a production company at this time to determine ways to livestream the event for those family members unable to attend. 

We have begun preparations for the Pfield graduations, including plans which practice social distancing by students and staff and families in the stadium. We will send additional logistical information, including gate entrances and seat assignments, to Senior families as soon as plans are finalized. 

This is an enormous undertaking, and our staff is committed to working hard to provide our students with an unusual but incredible graduation experience, but we are also asking our families for their cooperation to ensure safe practices and social distancing.

As promised, please click on the link below to see a list of fines/fees/commitments for your senior.  Please know that the list does not include text books.  Because the books that were collected from lockers need to be in quarantine for 9 days, we were not able to send an inventory of outstanding textbooks.  This list is sorted by student id.  You can type Ctrl F to use the find option, type in your senior's id number and hit enter.  Please note: Your senior may have more than one line of fees/fines. Also, if your student returns his/her library book at the Locker Drop Off day (see more info below), that fine will not be assessed.

4/30 - Good Afternoon PHS Class of 2020: 

Tomorrow, May 1st at 2pm, Ms. Keck will be holding a virtual class meeting. Please follow the Zoom Link that was emailed to your parents email account.

 I will be sharing a slide presentation during the meeting that will hopefully address any questions you have about the next month of school.

There will also be a chance to ask questions through the chat feature of zoom. If you are unable to attend this meeting, the slide presentation will be posted on the Pflugerville HS website.

 This meeting is for senior students only.

I know that you are all mature and respectful young adults and you will follow the student code of conduct during the meeting.  I hope you can join us tomorrow, if you cannot, I will be hosting a meeting every Friday.

Cap/Gown and Invitation order day - November 12, 2019. Graduation supply order packets were delivered through your English classes.  If you need another packet, please come to the front office. Herff Jones will be on campus on today  (11/12) from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm in the cafeteria.  

 


PHS Financial Aid Events -

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) will be available beginning October 1st, 2019. As such, October is Financial Aid month. 

We do encourage that PHS Seniors complete all available college applications and either a FAFSA or TASFA (you will only complete one) by October 31st, 2019. This will give your senior the best financial package possible. Therefore, PHS is proud to present four events during the month of October to assist your family with the Financial Aid Process. They are listed below. 

Financial Aid Presentation – This presentation will be offered on October 8th, 2019 in the Pflugerville High School Lecture Hall from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. A Financial Aid Director from a local University will detail the entire Financial Aid and Scholarship Process. This event is open to ALL PHS students and families. There is no registration needed for this event. 

Financial Aid Workshop – We will offer three workshops during the month of October. During these events, Financial Aid experts will be on hand to assist your family with filling out the FAFSA or TASFA. These events are open to member of the 2020 graduating class and their families only.

  1. October 11th, 2019 (1:00 – 4:00 PM) – PHS Library
  2. October 12th, 2019 (8:30 – 12:30 PM) – PHS Library
  3. October 22nd, 2019 (6:30 – 8:30 PM) – PHS Library
